(More customer reviews)i purchased this body wash because i thought my kids and i would benefit from the ingredients shea and cocoa butter since we all have dry skin. i've always trusted and used this brand for our sensitive skin. the general idea is that johnson's baby products are gentle for baby's skin. but this shea and cocoa butter product contains "parabens", which is known to cause allergic reaction in a very tiny percentage of the population, according some articles i've read. unfortunately, my children and i happen to be part of that "very tiny percentage". the bottle is also labeled "allergy tested", so it's a bit contradicting to add a preservative ingredient that could possibly cause an allergic reaction on very sensitive skin(like that of a newborn baby's?).
needless to say, i was livid when i found out that the products (i also purchased the shea cocoabutter lotion) i was purchasing for my sensitive skin is part responsible for my skin eruptions, and my kids' eczema, which has been nonstop since i started using this product. i never imagined it would have been caused by baby lotion and body wash from a trusted brand.
this product is found in the baby aisles at the pharmacies and grocery stores. so it's safe to assume that it is marketed for use on babies. they also have a product line for adults, so maybe those products have different ingredients--different standards, perhaps, but they are placed separately from the baby products.
however small the risk of a reaction may be, as a parent, as a consumer, it would be nice to know of such information, so that "just in case" my child has a bad reaction, it would be easier to rule out the possible causes. it would be in the best interest of everyone if manufacturers at least take responsibility and place an allergy information warning on the back of the products that contain this ingredient.
this ingredient is a very common preservative, used to inhibit bacterial growth to lengthen the shelf life of a product. i've emptied half my medicine cabinet, thrown out most of my antiperspirant/deodorants, soaps and lotions, even the very topical medication i was using to treat my skin because it contained parabens...in "safe, small doses", but if most of your products contain it, and you happen to be allergic, it becomes significant.
luckily, most of you readers won't have to worry about parabens, but who's looking out for the "smaller" population? we exist, nonetheless.
